NEW BEDFORD — Butternut Bistro‘s mission is to offer a special and relaxing place in the community that offers a good cup of coffee and a hearty meal.
“We’re pretty casual, just trying to feed our community breakfast and lunch,” said owner Deborah DeSouza.
The most popular menu items at the bistro located at 4437 Acushnet Ave. include the fish & chips, egg sandwich, the grilled cheese and the assortment of omelets. Included on the breakfast menu are crepes, eggs Benedict, quiche and Nutella banana croissants, to name a few.

Additionally, for lunch there’s several choices such as a chicken piccata, grilled shrimp dinner, wild haddock sandwich and pan-seared scallops. Families can also order savory pies such as a French meat and chicken pot pie.
Dessert varies daily with a variety of pies and muffins, strawberry shortcake and a Limoncello mascarpone cake.
But there’s also a vast drinks menu such as lemonade, an Arnold Palmer, a raspberry rickey, French press coffee, cappuccinos, cold brew iced coffee and a CoCo CoFFee which is a double shot of espresso, coconut water and milk over ice.
DeSouza is a longtime restaurateur in the New Bedford area – Butternut Bistro marks her third venture.
Originally a district manager for Sally Beauty Supply, DeSouza decided to open a restaurant after working at Freestone’s and at the urging of a colleague who told her to pursue the restaurant business.

“It wasn’t something I planned my whole life, it just sort of happened,” she said. Butternut Bistro opened in December 2020.
“I think the name describes our personality of the restaurant,” she said. “It’s a cozy, relaxing atmosphere… A lot of the décor I brought from my own home. Things that I felt would make it comfortable for sipping on coffee and catching up with friends.”
DeSouza says she’s been working as the sole cook since day one. She says she loves making the omelets, something she learned while spending a short time working at a breakfast place in Maine.

She also says her muffin recipes are meaningful to her because she learned how to bake from her grandmother. All in all, she loves servicing people and making them happy, she said.
“I’m thrilled that we’ve were accepted into the community,” she said. “I’ve seen the same faces since we started, that follow me around the city.
“I really feel great that I’m able to do something that I enjoy, and people enjoy coming to my place.”
