Cole’s Coffee may look like a cozy hangout for hot drinks and treats, but it’s not the only one. This summer, Sean (founder and owner of Cole’s Coffee) opened a shop as a summer feeding center for children through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
Children usually receive this food through the Summer Alive program, but due to COVID-19 the camp is not running this year. When Sean heard this news, she knew she had to do something.
“When I learned that there would be no summer alive this year, I said,’I can’t feed my kids,’” Sean explains. “So now we are taking care of our children. They are coming in, eating and playing.”
Sean opens the door to low-income neighbors for lunch five days each week. Children between the ages of 8 and 13 eat a nutritious meal with fresh fruits and vegetables. After that, they’re usually stuck to play on the Wii or complete their craft, and are always within reach of the free snack drawers in the corner. There is no fixed time for children to stay in the store — they are always welcome to Sean.
“Sometimes kids come to the store and say,’You’re not closing early, right?’. Their facial expressions when they eat — they just get brighter. That’s great for me. These kids, I treat them like myself. “
At the end of the day, Sean is reassured by the knowledge that she shares lessons with the next generation in order to treat others kindly.
“That means a lot of knowing that I’m going to change some lives. Do you know if it’s just one life? I’m a better way for these kids I’m going to show that there are so many difficulties in my life that I also share my personal story with them. I tell them that you don’t have to stay in that rut I want to show you, you don’t have to be homeless, you don’t have to be at risk of being homeless. Look at what I have now, “she laughs.
Food should not be an impossible choice. For many of us, our daily diet is just a choice of what to eat for dinner. For people facing hunger, a daily diet offers a very different type of choice. Often it is an impossible choice between food and other important needs such as utilities, housing and medicine.
In September of this year, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank became available to the general public Learn, commit, and talk To deal with food insecurity. How do you choose to end hunger?
